Stories outside the wire

Project: 2019

Once upon a time in a military base in Lancashire

A collaborative storytelling project set to highlight the experiences of military families is underway in Lancashire.

Funded by the Armed Forces Covenant, ‘Stories Outside the Wire’aims to empower military spouses and children to share their stories of the realities of life in a military family.

Participants from Weeton and Fulwood Barracks will produce an illustrated story book that can be used as an information, advice and guidance resource for military families joining life on the base.

The project has been designed as a collaborative piece of work between The Washington Group (North West) Community Interest Company (TWG) and Army Welfare NW.

TWG Director, Rebecca Steel, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have received this funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund and extremely excited about the opportunity this provides for the military community in Lancashire. As a military wife I understand the voices and experiences of military families can sometimes get lost within the family focus on the service persons’ career.

“The idea for this illustrated story book came from some of the wives who participated in a previous project. The wives on base wanted to develop a story book that could be used to tell stories to their children but alsoshare what life is like in a military family. The aim of the story book is to provide information, advice and guidance for dealing with every day concerns like childcare, where to go for support with a particular issue or how to access help.”
